Why choose NCRQ Personal Injury Liability and Absence Reduction course?
NCRQ qualifications have been designed to develop the skills required to apply your knowledge to the real world, rather than answer exam questions.
NCRQ qualifications have been developed by the UK’s leading experts on health and safety, insurance, and civil claims; including academics, barristers, serving Health and Safety Executive specialists. Importantly they have also been developed in partnership with some of the biggest employers in the UK – including the BBC, Royal Mail, and Siemens plc.
The modular approach to our qualifications means that completion of the Level 6 Certificate in Personal Injury Liability will count towards the full Diploma in Applied Health and Safety.
Personal Injury Liability and Absence Reduction course aims
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand the risks and control measures associated with the biggest causes of lost time and civil claims: work-related stress, manual handling, slips and trips and asbestos
- Be able to develop and implement strategies and procedures to reduce sickness absence and lost time
- Know how to apply sensible risk control measures that allow activities to take place in a safe manner, without unnecessary bureaucracy
- Recognise how an employer may be liable in tort for personal injury claims
- Appreciate the often significant differences between keeping people safe and compliance with statutory duties, and recording and retaining the evidence to be able to successfully defend a civil claim
- Be able to advise an employer of appropriate steps to reduce both the number of civil claims and their associated costs, both generally and in relation to specific risks
Who is it for?
The Certificate in Personal Injury Liability and Absence Reduction is suitable for you if you:
- have little or no knowledge or experience in dealing with or reducing sickness absence and personal injury claims, and want a good foundation in this area
- are already an experienced safety practitioner wanting to improve your skills and knowledge in this area, or
- work in human resources, insurance or claims handling areas and want to improve your understanding and knowledge.
High rates of sickness absence and personal injury claims, and the significant associated costs, are one of the leading drivers for employers to improve their health safety management systems – and yet existing safety qualifications do not examine this important area in any detail. Following demand from employers, it has been integrated as a significant part of the Diploma in Applied Health and Safety.
The law, standards, and regulatory arrangements of the UK are an integral part of this qualification. Overseas students may wish to contact us for advice.
How is it delivered?
NCRQ qualifications teach you to teach yourself. You are not required to memorize facts and recite lists of information. Instead, you learn to solve problems confidently by applying the legal duties in tort, and the basic principles of calculating damages, to be able to estimate the likely outcome of a claim in relation to liability and costs.
You will be given a workbook, which takes you slowly through a wide range of case law and studies. A sample of the workbook is available here, and all of the case studies are based on real life incidents where people have been killed or seriously injured. NCRQ believe that studying real claims is the best way of learning how to improve and implement effective controls. You are required to undertake a variety of activities, such as making notes, reading online publications, completing NCRQ e-learning modules, or simply thinking and reflecting on something before moving on. In this way, you will progressively improve your knowledge and skills and, importantly, be able to apply them to a real working environment.
Assessment and certification
NCRQ assessments are designed to reflect real life, and enable you to demonstrate the skills that employers actually want. In real life, you are not isolated in a room and required to recite answers to generic questions in a specific format. In real life, you work at your own pace, albeit to a deadline, and have access to resources, legislation, and free online publications. In real life, you have time to write a report in your own style or that of your organisation. And in real life, there is often not one black and white solution for a problem.
When you feel ready to complete an assessment, you simply let us know and you will be able to download your assignment from myNCRQ – our online learning portal. You will be given a realistic scenario and a task to complete. This may involve analysis of a range of supporting information, such as documents, witness statements, absence data, etc. You will then be required to produce a written report or presentation, and upload it through myNCRQ within the allocated time.
