Online Defensive Driving Training

The Echo3 online Defensive Driving course teaches the mindset and techniques that reduce collision risk for anyone who drives for work.

Defensive driving means anticipating hazards before they develop, reading the road ahead, to the sides and behind, and making decisions early enough to avoid them. It covers the human factors behind most collisions: distraction, fatigue, poor observation and failure to adjust for conditions.

Defensive Driving course

Drivers who complete this course make better decisions on the road. Employers get documented proof that staff have received structured driver safety training.

Why Defensive Driving Training Matters

Driving for work is a significant risk factor in UK road safety. Department for Transport analysis shows that around one in three fatal and serious road collisions involve at least one person driving for work duties.

In 2024, there were 128,272 road casualties in Great Britain, including 1,602 fatalities, highlighting the ongoing scale of road risk in the UK.

Most collisions involve human factors such as inappropriate speed, following too closely, distraction, fatigue, or poor observation. These are the key behaviours that defensive driving training is designed to address.

For employers, any collision involving a staff member driving for work can result in serious consequences, including HSE investigation, increased insurance premiums, loss of contracts, and in severe cases, prosecution under health and safety legislation. Structured training helps reduce this exposure and improves driver safety standards.

Legal Requirements for Driving at Work

Employers whose staff drive for work have a legal duty to manage the associated risk.

· Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: requires employers to ensure the safety of employees and others, including when driving.

· Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999: require a risk assessment covering driver competence, vehicle condition and journey planning.

· Road Traffic Act 1988: sets out speed limits, roadworthiness and driving standards for all drivers.

The Echo3 Defensive Driving course helps employers meet the driver competence element of these requirements. Every completion is stored in the Echo3 LMS, giving managers a clear record for compliance checks.
