Manual Handling
The Echo3 online Manual Handling course is designed for anyone whose role involves lifting, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving loads. The training helps learners minimise their risk of injury and supports employers in fulfilling their legal obligations under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
Poor manual handling techniques are a major cause of musculoskeletal disorders and long-term absence across many UK industries. In 2023/24 Musculoskeletal disorders accounted for 15.5% of all work-related ill health days (Office For National Statistics – 2023/24).
Promoting safe manual handling practices not only improves workplace safety and reduces employee absence but also lowers business costs and helps to ensure compliance with UK health and safety regulations (HSE Manual Handling at Work).
This fully accredited Manual Handling course provides a CPD certificate with QR code verification upon completion, confirming staff have received essential training (HSE Manual Handling Training Guidance) and offering proof for your records. Certificates are emailed to learners and administrators, with a secure online copy stored for three years.

Frequently asked Questions
Who should take Echo3 manual handling training?
The Echo3 Manual Handling training is suitable for staff at all levels whose roles involve moving, lifting, or carrying, however infrequently.
This Manual Handling training covers fundamental principles of safe lifting, making it suitable for a wide range of roles. It is particularly well-suited for professional, trade, technical, and domestic/housekeeping staff across industries such as Hospitality, Transport, Retail, Construction, Healthcare, Social and Child Care, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Cleaning, and Warehousing.
What are manual handling course objectives?
The objectives of the Echo3 Manual Handling course include;
- Equip learners with a clear understanding of the manual handling risks associated with their job.
- Enhance individual competence in identifying, assessing, and managing hazards during lifting and handling to reduce workplace injuries and sickness absence.
- Provide a cost-effective solution that appropriately trains staff in safe lifting and handling proceeds
- Provide a convenient platform to enrol staff, monitor progress, and securely maintain training records.
What are manual handling learning outcomes?
On successful completion of this Manual Handling training course, learners will be able to:
- Understand what manual handling injuries are and identify their common causes.
- Recognise the risks associated with poor moving and handling practices and understand the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders.
- Assess the risks involved in any manual handling activity.
- Apply safe procedures for common lifting tasks, including team lifts, pushing and pulling, and lifting from heights.
- Identify suitable mechanical aids for specific tasks and understand their proper use.
What is the cost of poor manual handling?
Adopting poor manual handling techniques increases the chance of developing MSDs that cause long-term or permanent discomfort.
543,000 workers suffered from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder in 2023/2024 reporting period. This is from a total workforce of 37 million. This is roughly 1 in 70 employees.
So if you require staff to lift it’s vital for their health that they receive appropriate manual handling training.
£21.6 billion is the estimated cost of injuries and ill health from current working conditions (2022/23). Manual Handling injuries alone account for well over a £1 billion of this total. On average each person suffering an MSD takes 14.3 days off work.
Manual handling training supports compliance and helps reduce these costs by minimising the risk of workplace injuries caused by poor lifting and handling practices.

What is a Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD)?
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are conditions that affect the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves, or bones. These disorders are often caused or aggravated by poor posture, repetitive movements, or unsafe manual handling practices.
Common examples include:
- Lower back pain
- Sprains and strains
- Tendonitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs)
- Herniated or slipped discs
Many of these conditions can be prevented by using proper manual handling techniques and maintaining safe working practices.
What is Manual Handling?
‘Manual handling’ is defined by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as the act of “transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force.” This includes any activity involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or placing down loads.
When performed incorrectly, poor manual handling techniques significantly increase the risk of injury and musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, potentially causing serious damage to bones, tendons, joints, ligaments, and muscles.
What are manual handling legal requirements?
Duties arising under the Manual Handling Regulations (Amended 2002) require employers to take all ‘reasonably practicable’ steps to reduce risks from lifting activities to an ‘appropriate’ level. The UK HSE offer a helpful guide (HERE).
In short employers must:
- Assessing the risks from lifting and manual handling
- Eliminate manual handling activities if possible and reasonable. For example provide mechanical aids like pallet trucks.
- Reduce the risks from any remaining activities for example though staff training.
- Periodically reassessing risks, including gathering staff in feedback
In addition under The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, all organisations must risk assess. Those with 5 or more employees must write down their risk assessments. Organisation should maintain safety records – this including records of training such as the Echo3 Manual Handling certificate.
Completion of this training by staff helps you and your business meet your duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, and as amended in 2002, in a cost-effective way.
How long is a Manual Handling certificate valid for?
The Echo3 Manual Handling certificate is valid for 3 years. The Echo3 system enables administrators to change the validity period.
UK Safety laws require appropriate training. It is the responsibility of employers to determine what training and refresher duration is appropriate. This is done through the risk assessment process.
Do you need Manual Handling Training?
First, think about these questions.
- Do individuals require to move or carry objects frequently?
- Do they need to move or carry objects a long way?
- Does their moving, handling or lifting require reaching up high or bending down?
- Does their moving, handling or lifting require twisting, flexing or any other awkward postures?
- Has anyone in your team experienced musculoskeletal disorders or related absence due to work activities previously?
- Are team lifts required?
If any of your answers are ‘yes’, then, Manual Handling training is likely appropriate. The extent of training should be proportional to the assessed risk.
