What are the objectives of Slinger training?
  • Provide participants with the knowledge needed to work safely as a slinger / signaller.
  • Help provide employers with an efficient way to train signallers and store training records.
What are the learning outcomes from slinger training?

On successful completion of this Slinger training, learners will:

  • Know the key responsibilities of the LOLER regulations.
  • Recognise the common hazards what add danger to lifts.
  • Know how to mitigate the risks from lifting hazards.
  • Learn the main hand signals defined by the BS7127 Code Of Practice.
  • Know how to communicate clearly and concisely with crane operators to help ensure safe lifts.
What is the different between a Slinger and a Banksman?

Roles and terminology will vary from business to business.

Typically, the role of a Banksman is to provide instructions to vehicle drivers so they can manoeuvre safely around a site.

A Slinger’s role is to provide instructions to crane operators so the load can be manoeuvred then landed safely.

The Slinger is usually also responsible for connecting the load to the hoist and ensuring the use of safe lifting accessories.

Once the load has lander it will usually be a Slinger who will release the load safely.

What is LOLER?

LOLER refers to the Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment regulations that came into force in 1998.

This regulation aims to reduce the risks to people’s health and safety from lifting equipment that is provided for use at work.

Lifting equipment is also subject to the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER. We cover PUWER in another course.

LOLER requires that lifting equipment that has been provided for your use at work is:

1. Strong and stable enough for the particular use and marked to indicate safe working loads

2. Positioned and installed to minimise any risks

3. Used safely – so the work must be planned, organised and performed by competent people, and subject to ongoing thorough examination and inspected by a competent person.
