The Echo3 Level 1 Food Hygiene course is a fully online course designed for staff with minimal direct contact with food or those handling only wrapped and pre-packaged items. Taking around 40 minutes to complete, it provides the essential knowledge needed to serve food safely and hygienically.
Ideal for roles such as front-of-house staff, waiters, bar workers, hotel staff, nurses, kitchen porters, and warehouse staff, this course ensures employees understand basic food safety practices. For those preparing or handling food, a Level 2 course is more appropriate, while supervisors should consider Level 3 training.
With around 2.4 million cases of food poisoning in the UK each year, proper training is vital. The Echo3 course helps demonstrate compliance with food safety expectations set by the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland, ensuring your team is prepared for Environmental Health inspections and committed to safe food practices.
At Echo3 we design our courses around how people actually learn. The content is concise, free from unnecessary repetition, and supported by motion graphics to help explain key concepts. This enables workers to train efficiently, stay engaged, and ultimately stay safe at work.
Food Safety Act 1990 – This is the granddaddy of all food safety laws in England, Wales, and Scotland. It basically says three things:
Food Safety (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 – Northern Ireland has its own version that says exactly the same things.
Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 – These are the detailed rules about how to actually handle food safely. Think of the Food Safety Act as saying “be safe” and these regulations as the instruction manual showing you exactly how.
What Changed After Brexit?
Here’s something important: When the UK left the EU, we kept most of the same food safety rules, but now they’re called “assimilated law” instead of “EU law.” For you as a food handler, nothing really changed – the rules are still the same.
However, Northern Ireland is a bit different because of something called the Windsor Framework. If you work in Northern Ireland, some EU rules still apply. Details are covered in our Level 3 Food Hygiene & Safety course.
