The Echo3 Slinger Signaller course teaches ground personnel how to rig loads, communicate with crane operators, and conduct lifting operations safely on construction and industrial sites.
A slinger signaller is the person on the ground responsible for attaching loads to a crane, selecting the right lifting accessories, and directing the crane operator using standard hand signals or radio communication. The role sits at the centre of every lifting operation: if the slinger gets the rigging, signalling, or load assessment wrong, the consequences can be fatal.
Trained slingers understand how to plan lifts, identify hazards before a load leaves the ground, and communicate clearly under pressure. Employers get documented proof that personnel involved in lifting operations are competent, as required by LOLER.
Lifting operations remain one of the highest-risk activities on construction and industrial sites, particularly where cranes, hoists, and mobile lifting equipment are in use.
According to the HSE, being struck by a moving, flying, or falling object accounted for 14% of all worker fatalities in 2023/24. Handling, lifting, and carrying injuries represented 17% of all non-fatal workplace injuries in 2024/25, the second most common cause after slips and trips.
Many lifting incidents are caused by miscommunication between the crane operator and ground personnel, poorly selected or damaged lifting accessories, or loads that have not been properly assessed for weight and centre of gravity. These are the failures that trained slinger signallers are equipped to prevent.
Employers who fail to ensure competence in lifting operations risk HSE enforcement action, prosecution under LOLER, and the operational and reputational damage that follows a serious lifting incident.
All personnel involved in lifting operations must be trained and competent. The key regulations are:
The Echo3 Slinger Signaller course is written in compliance with LOLER. Every completion is stored in the Echo3 LMS, giving site managers a clear record for inspections and audits.
This course is for anyone whose work involves rigging loads, directing crane operators, or supervising lifting operations.
It suits new starters, experienced operatives refreshing their knowledge, and organisations documenting competence across a lifting team. For wider lifting equipment awareness, consider Echo3’s LOLER Awareness course.
Independently accredited by the CPD Group. The certificate supports site inductions, client procurement checks, and documented compliance with LOLER competence requirements.
Video-led modules covering: legal requirements and roles, lifting equipment and accessories, lift planning and risk assessment, conducting safe lifts, and standard slinger signals; each with interactive knowledge checks. Self-paced, accessible on any device. Most learners complete in approximately 60 minutes.
On passing, learners receive a QR code-protected, CPD-accredited certificate, valid for three years. All records are stored in the Echo3 LMS for employer access during audits and compliance reviews.
Echo3 delivers fully online, CPD-accredited training designed around how construction and industrial operations actually work, with tools to enrol, track, and record site workers without admin friction.
Pair this course with Echo3’s LOLER Awareness, Banksman, Working at Heights, and Risk Assessment courses for a practical approach to lifting and site safety compliance.
Investing in Slinger Signaller training reduces the risk of lifting incidents, protects workers on site, and gives employers documented proof of LOLER competence.
Accredited. Practical. Delivered in around an hour.
At Echo3 we design our courses around how people actually learn. The content is concise, free from unnecessary repetition, and supported by motion graphics to help explain key concepts. This enables workers to train efficiently, stay engaged, and ultimately stay safe at work.
Objectives of the Slinger Course:
On successful completion of this Slinger training, learners will:
Roles and terminology will vary from business to business.
Typically, the role of a Banksman is to provide instructions to vehicle drivers so they can manoeuvre safely around a site.
A Slinger’s role is to provide instructions to crane operators so the load can be manoeuvred then landed safely.
The Slinger is usually also responsible for connecting the load to the hoist and ensuring the use of safe lifting accessories.
Once the load has lander it will usually be a Slinger who will release the load safely.
LOLER refers to the Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment regulations that came into force in 1998.
This regulation aims to reduce the risks to people’s health and safety from lifting equipment that is provided for use at work.
Lifting equipment is also subject to the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, known as PUWER. We cover PUWER in another course.
LOLER requires that lifting equipment that has been provided for your use at work is:
1. Strong and stable enough for the particular use and marked to indicate safe working loads
2. Positioned and installed to minimise any risks
3. Used safely – so the work must be planned, organised and performed by competent people, and subject to ongoing thorough examination and inspected by a competent person.
The Echo3 Slinger certificate is free with each manual handling course purchased. The Slinger certificate is emailed immediately upon successful completion of the course.
If you wish to receive a posted copy of the certificate that can be ordered HERE for an additional £9.
The Echo3 Slinger certificate is valid for 3 years. The Echo3 system enables administrators to change the validity period.
UK Safety laws require appropriate training. It is the responsibility of employers to determine what training and refresher duration is appropriate. This is done through the risk assessment process.
A Slinger Signaller plays a crucial role in construction and industrial settings, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of materials.
They are responsible for signalling crane operators, rigging loads, and ensuring lifting operations are conducted safely.
This online Slinger Signaller course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a Slinger Signaller, including safety protocols and communication techniques for both rigging and signalling.
