Online Workplace First Aid Training
The Echo3 Workplace First Aid course gives staff the knowledge to respond to common workplace emergencies and helps employers meet their first aid obligations under UK law.
First aid is the immediate assistance given to an injured or ill person before professional medical help arrives. The aims are straightforward: preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. Every workplace is required to have adequate first aid arrangements in place.
Trained staff know how to assess an emergency, when to call for help, and what to do in the critical minutes before an ambulance arrives. Employers get documented proof that their first aid provision meets the legal minimum.
Why Workplace First Aid Training Matters
Workplace injuries and medical emergencies can happen in any setting, from offices and retail premises to warehouses and construction sites.
According to the HSE, 124 workers were killed in work-related incidents in 2024/25, and an estimated 680,000 sustained a non-fatal injury. These figures exclude medical emergencies from natural causes, such as heart attacks and strokes, which also require immediate first aid response.
Research by the British Red Cross found that only 5% of UK adults felt both confident and able to provide first aid in a life-threatening emergency. In most situations, some form of first aid, even if imperfect, is better than none.
Employers who fail to provide adequate first aid arrangements risk HSE enforcement action, increased liability following an incident, and a workforce unable to respond when it matters.
Legal Requirements for Workplace First Aid
All employers have a legal duty to provide adequate first aid arrangements for their workforce.
- Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981: require employers to provide equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure employees receive immediate attention if injured or taken ill at work.
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974: the overarching duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of employees.
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999: require employers to assess risks and ensure appropriate arrangements are in place, including first aid provision proportionate to the workplace.
The Echo3 Workplace First Aid course is written in compliance with the 1981 Regulations. Every completion is stored in the Echo3 LMS, so employers can produce proof of training for inspections and audits.

Frequently asked Questions

Workplace first aid training teaches employees how to respond to common workplace emergencies before professional medical help arrives. It covers assessing situations, calling for help, treating injuries, and recording incidents to support both safety and legal compliance. It also covers what is required for a companies legal compliance so having an appropriately stocked first aid kit.
Recent research shows only 5% of adults have the confidence and skill to provide first aid in emergency situations.
But a basic knowledge of First Aid can enable potentially lifesaving intervention.
In the UK over the 12 months 2023/2024 there were 138 fatalities at work and 61,663 injuries reported through RIDDOR.
These statistics, published annually by the Health & Safety Executive, do not include first aid emergencies at work due to ‘natural causes’ for example, heart attacks or strokes because employers only need to report these illnesses if they result from trauma due to a workplace accident.
Injuries from road traffic accidents that occur at work are also not reportable in the UK through RIDDOR and therefore not included in the statistics.
So, the chance of you encountering an emergency situation at work is not small. This likelihood will also vary depending on your specific role. Preparations should reflect the risk.
Prevention is the best cure. So, if you notice anything at work which has the potential to be dangerous, or you have a suggestion to make your workplace safer, please report it to your supervisor or Health and Safety Officer.
The objective of this workplace first aid course is to improve first aid arrangement by;
- Give learners an understanding of UK first aid regulations
- Know what employers must do to comply with UK First Aid regulations
- Provide the knowledge needed to appropriately attend to common workplace first aid emergencies
- Gain awareness of post incident actions to help prevent future occurrences.
Employers are required to provide appropriate first aid arrangements in the workplace, which includes ensuring staff are adequately trained. What is considered “appropriate” will vary depending on the nature of the work, the level of risk, and the size of the workforce, so employers should carry out a First Aid Needs Assessment to determine their specific requirements.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach, but guidance from the HSE provides a useful starting point. In low-risk environments such as offices with fewer than 25 employees, an appointed person may be sufficient. For low-risk workplaces with 25 to 50 employees, at least one person should be trained in Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW). In higher-risk environments, such as construction sites, it is recommended to have at least one first aider for every 5 to 50 employees.
These are general guidelines only. Employers should always consider their specific workplace hazards, workforce size, and operational risks when deciding what level of first aid provision is appropriate.
Workplace injuries remain a significant risk across all industries. According to the latest HSE statistics (2024/25), there were 59,219 RIDDOR-reportable injuries to employees — representing the more serious incidents that must be reported by employers.
The type of work carried out remains one of the biggest risk factors, with shift workers and part-time employees statistically more likely to be injured.
The leading causes of workplace injuries continue to be:
- Slips, trips, and falls on the same level
- Handling, lifting, or carrying
- Being struck by a moving object
- Acts of violence
- Falls from height
These “everyday risks” consistently account for the majority of incidents reported to employers and the HSE.
In addition to injuries, workplaces must also be prepared for sudden medical emergencies.
- Over 100,000 heart attacks occur each year in the UK
- More than 100,000 strokes occur annually
- Around 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, with approximately 15% happening in the workplace
Early recognition and immediate action significantly improve survival rates. Rapid response — including recognising stroke symptoms or applying the chain of survival — can be life-saving.
Workplace first aid training certificates are typically valid for three years, after which refresher training is recommended to maintain knowledge and compliance.
Yes. Many online training platforms store certificates and completion records, allowing employers to easily access proof of training for audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
Failure to provide adequate first aid arrangements can result in:
- Enforcement action from the HSE
- Increased liability in the event of an incident
- Non-compliance with UK health and safety laws
