Mercury Awareness Course
The Echo3 online Mercury Awareness course has been designed to support those in any workplace where there is a risk of encountering Mercury.
Mercury is highly toxic and, if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed into the body through skin contact, it can cause very serious ill health. For example, neurological disturbances, kidney damage and muscle weakness.
The online course provides candidates with an awareness of these dangers, appropriate safety measures and how to respond should contamination occur.
A Mercury Awareness certificate will be emailed on successful completion.

What is Mercury?
What is Mercury
Mercury is a chemical element found widely in the environment, both from natural sources in the Earth’s crust and because of human processes.
Mercury exists in three forms.
Elemental mercury – Also known as quicksilver, elemental mercury is a heavy, silvery-white liquid.
Inorganic mercury – Inorganic mercury is abundant in the environment, most commonly as the minerals cinnabar and metacinnabar, and as impurities in other minerals.
Organic mercury – Formed through a complex environmental process, mercury can convert from inorganic to organic form when combined with carbon.
What are the hazards from Mercury?
Mercury is a neurotoxin. This means it is poisonous to nerve tissue.
The phrase ‘mad as a hatter’ refers to the health impact of Mercury on those making felt hats in the early 1800s. Mercury was used to turn animal fur into felt.
Prolong expose resulted in a variety of physical and mental illnesses, including speech problems, hallucinations, and emotional instability.
The extent of the effect of mercury exposure on a person’s health depends on a number of factors:
- The form of mercury (e.g. elemental or organic)
- The amount of mercury exposed to
- The length of exposure
- The method of exposure (e.g. inhaled, eaten, skin contact)
- The age of the person exposed
- The general health of the exposed person
